Sportsman essay on Francesca Schiavone

Every year, Sports Illustrated writers are asked to nominate athletes for Sportsman of the Year for the “My Sportsman” series that runs on SI.com ahead of the actual announcement. For 2010, my choice was the Italian tennis player Francesca Schiavone, who improbably won the French Open. This piece won a USTWA writing award in 2011 (second place, column/commentary).
